What Is It?
The “I Reclaim” Campaign is the online component of Ballarat’s 2017 Reclaim the Night event.
It centres on the statement “I Reclaim The Night Because...” and asks individuals to share what motivates them and what personal meaning the event holds, highlighting the many and varied reasons why we participate.
Reclaim the Night is a global event that recognises the phenomenon of violence against women. The march and the lead up to it gives members of the community the opportunity to come together, acknowledge that women’s lives matter and take a firm stance that violence will not be tolerated.
Unfortunately, over recent years the march has only been held sporadically in Ballarat, with the last march taking place in 2014 and prior to the 2012 march it had not been held for in Ballarat for 14 years.
Our team is thrilled to be organising this year’s event and are keen to ensure that is an annual occurrence for Ballarat. We look forward to engaging with the community, and taking part in the “I Reclaim” Campaign is a great way to show your support and to help us demonstrate Ballarat’s commitment to lasting social change.

How You Can Participate?
You can get involved in three easy steps, all you need to do is:
1. Print the “I Reclaim the Night because…” template and in 25 words or less, write in the space, the reason you participate and/or why it’s important to you.
2. Take a selfie or have someone take a photo of you holding your sign (see the examples in the template).
3. Show your support by sharing! Post your photo to social media with the hashtag #ReclaimBallarat and by all means tag and share with your friends. Once posted, the RTN Ballarat team will compile these photos into an album on our Facebook and you might even be featured as a post on our page.
* By submitting a photo with the #ReclaimBallarat hashtag, you agree to its use on social media and promotional information

Suggestions To Get You Started:
There’s many reasons why we Reclaim The Night and you might find it’s hard to express on paper. That’s ok, and while we would love to hear your own unique reasons, we’ve provided a few past examples to get the ball rolling:
I Reclaim the Night because…
“I want to set a good example”
“The safety of myself/those I love, is important “
“I want things to change”
“Violence isn’t the way to go “
“I want to change gender roles and norms”
“Women deserve better. Safe streets!”
“I shouldn’t be scared to walk home alone”
“I want safer streets for my sisters!”
“I want to and deserve to feel safe and unthreatened on MY streets.”
“My daughters should grow up in an equal world”
“My body, my rules, I am no one’s property”
“We are all people, we all deserve equal rights”
“I want my mum to not worry about my safety”
“It should never have become a risk in the first place”
“Being called a girl should not be an insult”
“We need women to achieve their full potential without feeling inferior”
